Situated close to High Hazels, this cottage is part of a converted stableyard and also dates back to Bess of Hardwick times. It too has retained many of its sixteenth-century detail through 400 years of history. The spectacular Hardwick Hall, the charming gardens and orchards and the historic parkland are all waiting to be explored during opening hours. Ideally situated to visit nearby Clumber Park, Kedleston Hall and Chatsworth House.

Parking: There is space available for 2 cars in the stable courtyard.

Offers: Holiday Cottage guests have free access to Hardwick Hall, gardens and Stainsby Mill during opening hours. Outside of normal opening hours the gardens are accessible exclusively for Holiday Cottage guests.

For any 3 night booking starting on a Thursday, guests can benefit from a late departure time on the Sunday of 6pm, at no extra charge.

Catering: Pre-order meals -

To help your stay start in comfort and complete relaxation, the team at Hardwick Hall can provide a meal on arrival ready for you to pop In the oven. All you need to do is put your feet up and relax.

The delicious menu ranges from £4.50-£8.95 per person and is made with local produce.

The meal will be delivered to the cottage and left in the fridge ready for your arrival. We need a minimum of three working days notice.

We are happy to cater for private dinners a menu can be planned for your group. Menus and services required will be priced accordingly.

Heart of England

The industrial heart of England now offers one of Britain's loveliest National Parks, the Peak District, a region of outstanding natural beauty with spectacular and contrasting scenery. Moorland, ancient oak woodlands, bustling market towns and pretty villages are easily accessible from some of our major cities. Some of the Trust's finest properties are in the area, including High Peak Estate, straddling the Yorkshire-Derbyshire border, Lyme Park mansion and gardens, surrounded by a medieval deer park and Hardwick Hall, hardly changed since its creation in Elizabethan times. To the south is the gentler area of the Cotswolds and its neighbouring county of Warwickshire. With its gently rolling countryside of hills and valleys, picturesque stone villages and fine houses, this beautiful area now offers the visitor a glimpse of traditional English life. The National Trust owns some of the loveliest countryside in the area, some fine houses and important gardens. There is a huge and varied choice from Tudor Snowshill Manor, with its eclectic collection of musical instruments, clocks and Japanese armour to Hidcote Manor Gardens, famous for its rare trees, shrubs and outstanding herbaceous borders. Other Trust places in the area include Newark Park with its stunning views, the Sherborne Park estate, while the Buscot and Coleshill estates in west Oxfordshire are set in 7,500 acres of rolling farmland and woodland. The Iron Age hill-fort of Badbury Hill offers superb views over the Upper Valley south to White Horse Hill and the Berkshire Downs.

Peak District

With its spectacular and contrasting scenery, the Peak District is a region of outstanding natural beauty and one of Britain?s loveliest National Parks. The National Trust has been hard at work here for over 100 years and now cares for some 40,000 acres. High Peak Estate is the largest estate, over 33,000 acres of high moorland straddling the Yorkshire-Derbyshire border. Although only ten miles from the centre of Sheffield, the Longshaw Estate boasts more than 1,700 acres of open moorland, gritstone edges and ancient oak woodland, while the 4,400 acre South Peak Estate lies in the magnificent limestone hills, centred upon the well-known beauty spots of Ilam and Dovedale. On the foothills of the Peak District, Lyme Park contains an Italianate mansion and Victorian garden surrounded by a medieval deer park of almost 1,400 acres.Hardwick Hall is ideally situated for exploring the Peak District and Sherwood Forest, while the gentler landscapes of South Derbyshire contain pretty villages, bustling market towns and the fast-growing National Forest. The area is steeped in history with ancient castles, grand houses and sites that reveal the ingenuity of our industrial past.

    The location at Hardwick was perfect for us, as our ages ranged from 4 to 93! The after-hours access to the gardens was fabulous, and the chance to have a meal delivered from the restaurant was much appreciated.

    Extensive grounds for walking/cycling

    Excellent stay at cottage. Great standard and very nice touch to be welcomed with cake and flowers which were left and also the large carton of milk on arrival. Lovely location & very friendly staff/volunteers. Thoroughly enjoyed. Appreciate your special discounts for short notice breaks. Hardwick Hall and extensive grounds for walking/cycling. House and facilities in close proximity. Longer opening times of restaurant.

    Whole cottage felt welcoming

    We were very impressed with the help given by the restuarant staff, as we arrived with heavy snow, and not much food as we had only provisioned for breakfast, assuming we would be out , but the snow kept us in on the Saturday and the staff let us have bread and milk to tide us over. Groundstaff, cleared the drive on the Sunday and gave us entrance to the gardens which was great in the snow. All staff were very helpful and we were very impressed with the standard and equipment in the cottage. We will be re booking as we would like to see the garden and house when not under 4 feet of snow!. very impressed.Whole cottage felt welcoming and was lovely and warm, furniture style and level of equipment in the kitchen impressive.

    A wonderfully relaxing long weekend despite the rain

    We stayed here over a rainy Easter. The cottage was cosy and atmospheric but with plenty of room. Hardwick Hall is minutes away and the cottage is next to the old stables. We had a wonderfully relaxing long weekend despite the rain. The children enjoyed the owls, bats and spooky ruins before being tucked up into a four poster - sweet dreams.

    We have just returned for a short weekend break (Fri to Mon) at 4 Stableyard Cottages and it was a delight: beautiful location, well-stocked facilities with mod-cons - dishwasher, DVD, video player, wood burning stove for the boys - and an excellent pub down the hill! With the gentle chime of the clock, sheep baying and owls hooting, we slept well, ate heartily and enjoyed the cottage immensely. Highly recommended

  • Unfortunately we cannot accept website bookings more than 15 months in advance. Please call 0344 335 1287 or email cottages@nationaltrust.org.uk to enquire about future cottage bookings and reservations.
  • As part of the annual pricing review of all its cottages the National Trust reserves the right to move individual cottages up or down the price bands and to alter date breaks. We also reserve the right to charge supplements for certain cottages for specific dates covering special events, e.g. Rosetta Cottages on the Isle of Wight during Cowes week. We will notify you of any special event supplements at the time of booking.
