Yorkshire & North East England
Visitors walking to Lindisfarne Castle, Northumberland © Arnhel de Serra

In England's spectacular North East, Yorkshire and Northumberland are both counties that offer something for everyone. Yorkshire is world renowned for the beauty of its countryside and its scenery, reaching from the Dales in the west to the Moors in the east. There are also historic towns and cities, a spectacular coastline, much of which is in the care of the Trust, and some of the most magnificent historic houses in the country. The cathedral city of York, where the Trust has two holiday apartments, has a huge variety on offer to visitors - from magnificent York Minster to the medieval Shambles, an area steeped in history and now rich in gift and antique shops alongside fashionable boutiques. Northumberland too abounds in magnificent scenery with wide open stretches of moorland and a long and dramatic coastline. Steeped in history, protecting the border with Scotland since the days when Hadrian's army built the famous Wall, the county also has a wonderful collection of historic houses and castles including Cragside, Wallington and Lindisfarne, all of which are in the care of the Trust. The Trust now has cottages close to Hadrian's Wall itself and in many other spectacular locations including Alnwick and Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage Site.

Yorkshire is, not surprisingly, England's most popular holiday destination, as this vast county offers something for everyone. The beautiful countryside of the Dales and Moors, a dramatic and unspoilt coastline, a wealth of historic towns and cities, spectacular ancient ruins, and some of the most magnificent houses in the country. The National Trust owns over 24,000 acres of coast and countryside across the county as well as some splendid historic properties. These include Beningbrough Hall, East Riddlesden Hall, Nunnington Hall and the spectacular Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

    One of the best!

We have stayed in a fair number of NT cottages and this is one of the best! Very cosy, comfortable, and well equipped. Surprisingly quiet considering its location and an excellent choice for a short winter break.

Perfect place for a romantic retreat

Our cottage was in immaculate condition on arrival. The staff on sight were also very kind, and pleased to provide ideas for local sightseeing. The two of us came by train, not wanting to drive. Fountains is a perfect place for a romantic retreat for couples who like a good walk! There were a huge number of things to see and do in the immediate area, and a lovely kitchen to cook evening meals.

The view up the lane can be quite magical

We love Abbey Stores and try to stay there every year as it is always well presented and clean and feels like no-one else has been there since our last visit. The one thing I would like to change is the accessibility to a phone and I commented on this on my feedback form left in the cottage. With its high ceiling it is at once spacious yet cosy with the real fire. The view up the lane can be quite magical, as well as knowing that the magnificence of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is just beyond the gate. I feel the cottage seems to give me a hug when I walk in, as if to say "Welcome back!"

    The cottage is wonderfully located

Abbey Stores had a unique internal layout and was compact and comfortable. Ideal for the two of us. Everything was clean, tidy and well equipped. We appreciated the welcome tray, milk, card, flowers and the meals ready to heat which we had pre-ordered. We also greatly appreciated the vouchers enabling us to discounts on purchases in the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal gardens estate cafes and gift shop. The cottage is wonderfully located beside the West entrance to Fountains Abbey estate, enabling us to park our car securely and safely within the estate, right next door to the cottage. The very high standard of maintenance of the cottage and it's location contributed greatly to our first holiday in North Yorkshire being such a memorable experience. In addition to being well situated for the wonderful Fountains Abbey/Studley Royal Water Park, our visits to Ripon, Brimham Rocks, York and Whitby via the North York Moors Railway.

    Delightful

We have been returning to Fountains for over 40 years and only in recent years have been able to afford to stay in on-site properties. All three we have tried (Abbey Stores/Abbey Cottage/Vyner) have each been delightful.

    A romantic retreat.

This was our second visit to this comfortable cottage: a romantic retreat. We'd a wonderful time - again! The cottage is set next to a busy minor road, but this doesn't detract from its unique setting of being right next to the gates of Fountains Abbey. We enjoyed many walks through the grounds of the Abbey - always a delight no matter what season it is, and sitting in front of the fire in the evenings. A thoroughly relaxing break. We hope to be back again very soon!

A delightful cottage in a wonderful location.

A delightful cottage in a wonderful location. Having Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal gardens on the doorstep is a brilliant bonus. Take advantage of the guided tours of the garden and Abbey by helpful and informative volunteers. Our stay here has been a fantastic tonic from the fast London pace of life. A return visit is a definite we wish we’d found the Dales earlier
