Especially popular with walkers, this is a great place to get away from it all and enjoy the glorious surrounding countryside. Also nearby are the popular villages of Kettlewell, famed for the Calendar Girls film, and Grassington, well known for its summer festival and winter Dickensian weekends.

- Yorkshire & North East England

In England's spectacular North East, Yorkshire and Northumberland are both counties that offer something for everyone. Yorkshire is world renowned for the beauty of its countryside and its scenery, reaching from the Dales in the west to the Moors in the east. There are also historic towns and cities, a spectacular coastline, much of which is in the care of the Trust, and some of the most magnificent historic houses in the country. The cathedral city of York, where the Trust has two holiday apartments, has a huge variety on offer to visitors - from magnificent York Minster to the medieval Shambles, an area steeped in history and now rich in gift and antique shops alongside fashionable boutiques. Northumberland too abounds in magnificent scenery with wide open stretches of moorland and a long and dramatic coastline. Steeped in history, protecting the border with Scotland since the days when Hadrian's army built the famous Wall, the county also has a wonderful collection of historic houses and castles including Cragside, Wallington and Lindisfarne, all of which are in the care of the Trust. The Trust now has cottages close to Hadrian's Wall itself and in many other spectacular locations including Alnwick and Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage Site.
- Yorkshire Dales

Yorkshire is, not surprisingly, England's most popular holiday destination, as this vast county offers something for everyone. The beautiful countryside of the Dales and Moors, a dramatic and unspoilt coastline, a wealth of historic towns and cities, spectacular ancient ruins, and some of the most magnificent houses in the country. The National Trust owns over 24,000 acres of coast and countryside across the county as well as some splendid historic properties. These include Beningbrough Hall, East Riddlesden Hall, Nunnington Hall and the spectacular Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

We needed to recharge our batteries
We needed to recharge our batteries after another long haul. The Smithy was to die for only wish I could afford to buy it – food and drink abound and nothing to beat it anywhere – we will be back in September or October for another recharge. Now sorry to say back home to 3 teenagers and a life of toil

We have had a lovely stay
We have had a lovely stay in “The Old Smithy” – thank you for such a cosy and welcoming cottage. We can recommend the walk from Buckden – Cray – Yockenthwaite – Hubberholme and lunch at the George in Hubberholme was very good. Goredale Scar and Malham Tarn and Cove are a must – did a fabulous 9 mile walk with a somewhat scary scramble up Goredale Scar – not for the faint hearted! A really good trip, in a lovely part of the country. Thank you National Trust.
