 Wicken Fen

The Fens
This unique landscape is the result of man’s ingenuity over time to drain and reclaim the land. Originally they were vast stretches of reed and sedge covered swamp, with communities supported on a few gravel islands. Nowadays it is an area rich in wildfowl and wildlife, a haven for anglers with an intricate network of waterways and due to the short supply of hills, a cyclists paradise! The area is rich in horticulture and market gardens and there are numerous garden centres, church flower festivals and wonderful gardens.

Peckover House & Garden
Peckover House is a fine 18th-century town house set in the heart of the Georgian town of Wisbech. Just across the river is the birthplace of one of the founders of the National Trust, Octavia Hill. Wisbech is a busy fenland town with a good selection of inns and restaurants within easy walking of the Coach House Loft and forms a good base to explore Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. Spend a while wandering along the Backs and soaking up the atmosphere at the university city of Cambridge; while the city of Ely offers the splendid cathedral that dates back to 1083. The North Norfolk coastline is within easy reach, such as Hunstanton, Brancaster, Blakeney and Cromer offering popular beaches and the towns of Burnham Market, birthplace of Nelson and King’s Lynn, once one of England’s most prosperous ports, are both a short distance away.

National Trust places nearby: Houghton Mill, Oxburgh Hall, St George's Guildhall, Wicken Fen, Anglesey Abbey. Shop and pub: Wisbech within walking distance. Tea-room/café/restaurant: tea-room at Peckover, Wisbech. Railway station: March. Other attractions: north Norfolk coast, Brancaster RSPB and wildlife reserves, sea-life and pier shows at Hunstanton. Activities: walking, birdwatching, fishing, sailing, cycling.
