FAQ's

1. Who owns all your holiday cottages?

The National Trust does. There are over 3000 smaller houses and cottages owned by the Trust. Many of these are on the estates that surround our historic houses that are open to the public and were formerly used to house estate workers such as foresters, gardeners and agricultural workers. Others stand on land which were purchased as a part of the Neptune Coastal Campaign to perserve our coastline.

2. Why doesn't the Trust make all its smaller houses and cottages available as holiday houses?

Many are still used to house Trust staff working at visitor properties, some are let to tenant farmers and other people living in and contributing to communities, particularly where there is a need for local housing.

3. Where does the money go that is raised by the letting of holiday homes?

All the surplus from holiday cottage lettings goes back to the property or estate on which the cottage stands providing much needed income.

4. Which is the most popular holiday cottage?

The front runners are The Old Rectory at Rhossili, Manor Farmhouse at Snowshill and Abbey Stores at Fountains Abbey. But all our cottages are in great demand.
