| | | Upton House Built in 1695 of mellow local stone, Upton House was purchased and remodelled 1927-29 by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, Chairman of Shell 1921-46 and son of the founder of that company. The house contains his outstanding collection of English and continental Old Master paintings, tapestries, French porcelain, Chelsea figures and 18th-century furniture. The delightful garden has a large lawn leading to an amazing series of terraces which tumble down to a lovely pool. There is a long Mediterranean border full of colour and a large kitchen garden below which is still used to grow fruit and vegetables. There is a yew walk and interesting 1930s water garden which will make your visit to Upton House a great day out.
