 Derwent Water

The Lake District
The spectacular Lake District is considered by many to be the jewel in England’s crown, offering the country’s highest mountains, most stunning scenery, and loveliest countryside. Above all, it is a place to seek out active enjoyment; to walk, climb on the mountains, to sail and fish on the lakes. The National Trust protects about a quarter of the Lake District, including the central fell area, the major valley heads, and six of the main lakes and much of their shoreline. Among the National Trust’s historic properties are two houses of immense literary heritage. The Georgian Wordsworth House in Cockermouth is the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth, and Hill Top, a petite 17th-century house, in the hamlet of Near Sawrey, is where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her children’s stories.

 Langdale

Langdale
A great place for low-level walks or high fell walks in the Langdale Valley. The Hallgarth cottages are some of the Trust’s more remote cottages, for those wanting a real away from it all break, in glorious surroundings. Look out for the signs of early settlement, including a Norse meeting place, Ting Mound. Blea Tarn has spectacular views of the Langdale Pikes.

Ideal for the young at heart or those who prefer the basics in life. Facilities are limited.

National Trust places nearby: Coniston and Tarn Hows, Grasmere and Great Langdale Hill Top, Beatrix Potter Gallery, Gondola, Hawkshead and Claife. Shop and pub: shops in Ambleside, pub in Little Langdale. Tea-room/café/restaurant: Ambleside. Other attractions: Fell races, Langdale Gala, Coniston show, The Ambleside Sports, Gingerbread shop and Dove Cottage, Grizedale forest. Activities: walking, climbing, fishing, pony trekking, cycling.
