we have had a lovely 3 days ar Thrang, it is a lovely cottage in a stunning setting, with fab walks from the door, however my tips for staying in this cottage are 1. take your slippers the floors are lovely to look at but cold to walk on 2. take your walking boots or wellies to get from car to cottage 3.realise that the range was never meant to be a roaring fire and 4.November to March take your hot water bottle

We just got back from a dreamy week at Thrang. I can definitely recommend for anyone looking for a truly isolated, quiet break. The Duddon Valley, in which the cottage stands, is less visited than the more famous Lake destinations and as a consequence has an even greater sense of unspoilt beauty. The cottage is perfectly located for great walks straight out of the door.

We stayed three nights at Thrang in early March 2005, and it was superb. Importantly, the heating was very effective and at no point were any of us cold, despite the cold snap. The facilities are all that a group of people need for a weekend away - the only things we needed to bring apart from the standard food and supplies were bedlinen and towels. Thrang is in a great location for walking - we did a long walk up to The Old Man of Coniston on one day, and then a shorter walk with the children the next day to The Stepping Stones - and all by walking out the front door. The walk from the car park up to the cottage is just a few minutes and was fine. The stream can be heard from the cottage, sheep wander close by, and the views from the windows are postcard perfect.
A couple of important points for intending visitors:
1. The open fire. Lots of comments in the visitors books attest to the fact that the fire can be very very smoky. It was for us too, but by the last night we mastered it - we had the best results when very small pieces of wood (2 inch diameter max) were sandwiched vertically into the fireplace.
2. The NT driving directions state that after 1 mile turn right just before the traffic lights. In fact this is a misprint and it should be after 10 miles. We were arriving at night in three different groups and all of us thought we had gone wrong. However - we did all find it with no major problems.
Overall I recommend Thrang highly - none of us were hard core oatmeal-eating fell-walkers, we were just regular people looking to get away with a group of friends somewhere in the Lake District - and for this it was perfect.
