With its spectacular and contrasting scenery, the Peak District is one of Britain’s loveliest National Parks – not only a region of outstanding natural beauty, but with large areas also designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The National Trust has been hard at work here for over 100 years, maintaining all of its properties – some 40,000 acres – to the highest conservation standards. High Peak Estate is the largest estate, over 33,000 acres of high moorland straddling the Yorkshire-Derbyshire border. Although only ten miles from the centre of Sheffield, the Longshaw Estate boasts more than 1,700 acres of open moorland, gritstone edges and ancient oak woodland, while in the magnificent limestone region lies the 4,400 acre South Peak Estate, centred upon the well-known beauty spots of Ilam and Dovedale. This part of the world has been the venue of filming many period dramas from Pride & Prejudice in the 1990’s at Lyme park to a new costume drama, Jane Eyre, shot at Sudbury Hall, Kedleston Hall and Ilam Park.
