Visitors' Book - Pomone

Coastguard Cottages, Needles   Headland   Isle of Wight

We have just returned from a 1 week stay in Pomone and we will definately be booking for next year.

The cottage was great. Well maintained and really well decorated inside. The TV has 4 channels which was really refreshing. The view's are out of this world. We had our bacon sandwich one morning outside with the mist just out there on the sea - we felt like we were on top of the world. The local cafe is the wonderful Tearoom at the Needles Old Battery, owned by the National Trust - the pasties are recommended. You can walk down to Alum Bay (rather tacky I am afraid but get down to the beach and take a boat ride out to the Needles). They are loads of walks from the cottage and Freshwater and Yarmouth are all in easy car rides away. The Farm Shops and the Garlic Farm were amazing.

We loved the cottage and that part of the Isle of Wight and recommend it (or do we keep quiet about it??)

We stayed here after spending a week in New York at a fancy hotel, and what a wonderful place these cottages are.

I'm surprised how wonderful our first stay at a NT cottage was at Pomone. The cottages are kept beautifully, and the early 1900s bungalow style, while simple and brick built, is delightful. On the inside are restored wooden doors and original light switches. The furnishing and wall colours are in a lovely clotted cream colour and reminscent of display houses we visited at the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans. The decor feels surprisingly fresh and newly restored, this is probably a testament to the commitment of the staff who care for these cottages. All the crockery and utensils are so clean they feel almost unused.

You're surrounded by sea, great walks, rabbits, birds of prey and stoats which we were lucky to witness during our short stay. You can also sip a cup of tea from the garden and people watch as the tour buses rumble up the road winding round the hairpin bends. The double decker behemoths get up the steep road quite easily, so don't feel you need a 4x4 to get to the cottages, any car can do it.

These cottages are real gems, and apparently people travel from other parts of the Isle of Wight to stay here !

What an amazing place! Highlights included:
our first glimpse of the cottages on top of the clifftops,
sitting outside having our breakfast every morning, whilst looking out to sea,
long walks along the coastal path,
feeling smug when all the visitors to the needles left at 5pm and we could stay,
watching the peregrine falcons hovering above the cliffs, from the window of the cottage.
Pomone is a perfect location for a holiday!
