South Foreland South Foreland Lighthouse, set on the White Cliffs of Dover at St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe, is an historic landmark on the south coast. Built in 1843, it retains many of its original features and fittings and was the site from which Marconi sent the first ship-to-shore signal in 1898. On a clear day visitors can enjoy marvellous views to France and back across the dramatic cliff-top landscape. The village of St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe is a short walk from the Lighthouse and offers the usual local amenities and access to public transport. Visitors to East Cottage and the Lighthouse turn off the public road and onto a long, unadopted lane that is very rough and uneven in parts. Trust properties nearby include Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Smallhythe Place and the White Cliffs of Dover.
