Lizard Lighthouse | Lizard and Land's End Peninsulas The most southerly point in Britain, the Lizard, with its turbulent seas, treacherous reefs and towering cliffs, has an unusual quality which sets it apart from the rest of Cornwall. Yet, with its unique flora, tiny fishing villages and fascinating caves and coves, this quiet corner is ideal for the visitor who appreciates untamed natural beauty. Land’s End Peninsula has equally magnificent cliffs and turbulent seas, but is very different in character to the Lizard. Here, granite moorland meets the sea: an ancient haunting landscape of small, rocky fields, isolated farms and hamlets and an extraordinary wealth of archaelogical remains. |
| | View over Loe Pool | The Penrose Estate & Lower Pentire The Penrose estate is an ancient Cornish estate that has had only three owners in over 700 years. The focal point of its 1500 acres is Loe Pool, a tranquil freshwater lake over a mile long. It is cut off from the sea by a broad shingle bar heaped up by the heavy Atlantic seas. There is a five-mile circular path around the Loe Pool and estate and the Trust also owns the foreshore from Porthleven to Gunwalloe. Within metres of Carminowe Creek, the easterly arm of Loe Pool, stands Lower Pentire, a very secluded 18th-century farmstead. It is an idyllic spot, with the wildlife of the creek just beyond the front gate. Lower Pentire has been converted into comfortable holiday cottages, each with its own walled garden offering a sheltered sitting area. Be prepared for a little pitching and tossing as you approach on the long, stony and rutted farm track. Remote as Lower Pentire is, Helston is only two miles away for shopping and facilities.
