The National Trust owns two of the four former fish cellars in Port Gaverne and one of them the Union cellar now houses the White Cottage. This cottage has come a long way since its original purpose, which was probably a salt store or salting house (holes in both interior and exterior walls, where poles would have been inserted to hold the large stones that pressed the pilchard catch, can still be seen today). The original slate floors, boarded partitions and low doorways give a particular historic character to this cottage, whilst the added benefits of a courtyard, delightful secluded walled garden and comfortable living accommodation help to make it a very special place to spend a holiday.
