Engine Cottage is tucked into the valley side close to Danescombe Cottage, with the woods rising steeply behind. This intriguing building was originally built in the early 19th century to house a Cornish beam engine, used to pump water out of the Danescombe Valley Mine (sometimes called Wheal Calstock). Later it was reused as a blacksmiths shop on the ground floor, with a miners dry (changing room) on the floor above. Today it makes a cosy and romantic little hideaway in a wonderfully secluded part of the Cotehele estate.
Ground Floor: open-plan sitting room/kitchen/dining with solid fuel stove.
First Floor: double bedroom (with 6' bed which can also be a twin on request), bathroom with shower over bath.
Facilities
TV, Washing machine, tumble dryer.
Visitor Notes: Night storage heating and convector heating included. Parking is adjacent to the cottage.
Access to the cottage is down a public track/road that, in severe winter conditions, can be difficult to negotiate. In periods of very bad weather we may not be able to prepare the cottage for your stay. In these circumstances it is very unlikely that you would be able to access the cottage safely. If this is the case we will contact you in advance and discuss options with you.
