 EastDevon

East Devon
The richly fertile valleys of the Exe, the Culm and the Clyst, to the north and east of the cathedral city of Exeter, are home some of Devon’s most attractive rural landscapes and historic estates. This is a long-settled, long-farmed land and the patterns of fields, hedges, woods, lanes, farms and hamlets knit together to form a harmonious patchwork: a gentle countryside of contrasting colours and textures and beautiful views. Close to major roads including the M5, and yet worlds away in peace and spirit, you can quickly escape into a pastoral idyll and leave the clamour of the modern world behind. Within easy reach – for a touch of contrast - is the vibrant city of Exeter with its magnificent cathedral and busy shopping centre.

 Killerton

Killerton
Killerton is one of Devon’s greatest estates. Its 6,358 acres were given to the Trust in 1944 by the enlightened Sir Richard Acland. The estate includes the Acland family’s eighteenth-century house, a glorious landscape garden, parkland, farmland and woods, as well as much of the village of Broadclyst: all can be explored via a wonderful network of footpaths and signed circular walks. The house, beautifully positioned on the flanks of a hill, has the welcoming feeling of a relaxed and comfortable family home. Upstairs there is a renowned historical fashion collection, with a different themed exhibition every year. The garden, created in the 1770s by the famous nurseryman John Veitch, is perhaps Killerton’s greatest glory with an abundance of rhododendrons, magnolias, herbaceous borders and rare trees. Holiday Cottage guests have free access to Killerton house and gardens during opening hours.
