Dartmouth | South Devon South Devon is a vivid contrast to the rest of the county: almost a world within a world with an atmosphere and scenery all of its own. After the dramatic, rugged coastlines of North Devon, the high wilderness of Dartmoor and the settled rural charm of East Devon, here you have an extraordinarily vibrant land ablaze with the colours of the red sandstone cliffs, the exotic semi-tropical plants growing in the warm atmosphere, and the myriad greens and blues of the river estuaries burrowing their way deep into the pastoral landscape. There are beautiful coastal towns to discover, such as Salcombe, Dartmouth and Paignton, as well as inland towns like Kingsbridge and Totnes, steeped in history. With its mild and sunny climate, palm tree-lined seaside towns, estuaries filled with boats, and sandy beaches in sheltered coves, South Devon is a wonderful place for an annual holiday or short break. |
| | Greenway | Greenway Greenway is a beautiful woodland garden and evocative Georgian house set high on the banks of the River Dart: the former holiday home of Agatha Christie and her family, and described by her as ‘the loveliest place in the world’. Greenway's ‘secret garden’ has a romantic air of wilderness: rambling paths leading down to the water's edge, an old vinery, wild flowers, ferns and rare half-hardy plants. The house has been restored and contains many of the family’s collections; this was a place of happy family holidays and it retains the nostalgic charm of a 1950's holiday home. Day visitors are advised to arrive at Greenway Quay. There are however, two opportunities to stay in the heart of the Greenway estate and to enjoy that enticing evergreen holiday atmosphere for yourself. Holiday Cottage guests can have a free tour of Greenway house during seasonal opening hours (March-Oct). Access is very limited between Nov-Feb, please call 01803 842382 for more details. The gardens may still be accessed at all times.
